ABC 24/7 Pest Control South Wales have seen rats in places unimaginable. However, normally they are found in the loft of a home or outbuilding or running around in the garden. If they are in the attic they make quite a noise at night or the early hours of the morning.

Rats need three things to survive in your property. Food, water and shelter. If your property has one or more of these that’s quite likely why they are there. Other reasons why you may have a rat infestation are nearby building work, gaps or old pipe holes in your house (outside or underneath), ivy or trellis on the outside wall, cracked underground pipes – the list goes on.

Inspection of your property is vital to establish where rats are living. Places to check are the garden, outbuildings or sheds and your loft space. As well as possibly hearing noises in the loft when you are asleep (typically from 10 pm to 4 am), there are other clues. Are you feeding the birds? Does the feed disappear quickly? Are there any burrows in the garden?

You may find rat droppings too. Rat droppings are ¼ to ½ inch in length and are of a capsule shaped, with blunt ends. They are usually a shiny black, but this may vary according to their diets. In a loft space they can be confused with the droppings of squirrels to the non-professional, as they are quite similar. Fresh droppings glisten when fresh that indicates recent rat ingress into buildings and alongside sheds and outbuildings.

An adult rat can weigh between 12 to 16 ounces with a body length of 6-8 inches. Their nose is blunt with small ears and have quite small eyes. Their fur is smooth with variation of colours although usually black with shades of brown The tail is shorter than the head and body combined.

Rats live in burrows outdoors and they can take over rabbit warrens. The female can lay up to 60 young in her two year life span. Rats are nocturnal. If seen during the day it indicates there’s a lot of rats present and a shortage of food availability.

Rats will leave footprints in mud and this may indicate how many are present in each situation. Rats also drag their tails, leaving a whip-like mark between their feet tracks. Lightly sprinkled flour or unscented talc can help determine their tracks as they travel within suspected areas.

Rats continually gnaw to wear down their teeth as they continually grow, like human nails.  Rats gnaw on wood, but often cause damage by chewing electrical wiring. Rat burrows can be found along pathways and under sheds. Indoors, rats like to enter the attic, particularly from autumn through to late spring.

ABC 24/7 Pest Control will be pleased to carry out a full inspection of your home or business and run through with you exactly what we need to do to achieve control and riddance of a rat infestation. As a small business you will find our prices very reasonable and with over 20-years experience we offer the correct advice.

Interesting facts about Rats!

  • Rats have strong teeth – they are capable of exerting a pressure of 3,000 kilos per square inch ( enough to get through steel plate)
  • In theory, a single pair of breeding rats can produce over 600 young in a single year. However, many don’t survive!
  • Rats are omnivorous creatures and will at nearly anything. They can be cannibalistic to preserve themselves.

HOUSE MOUSE - MUS DOMESTICUS

ABC 24/7 Pest Control provide an expert local Mouse pest control service throughout South Wales and have been specialising in Mouse control for many years. We control Mice in domestic and commercial properties in the Swansea Bridgend Neath Port Talbot Llanelli and surrounding areas.

Call us on 07525 756966 Ask for Simon for a speedy response and affordable prices

You may be aware you have mice by finding mouse droppings in the kitchen, particularly on the worktops, behind the oven or fridge. Otherwise, mice often can be heard clambering around in the loft keeping you awake at night. Call us for free advice on how we can help you become mouse free – quickly and safely.

House Mice are extremely clever and adapt themselves quite quickly to their surroundings in the comfort of your warm home. They will quite happily live from small discarded food debris they find such as under the toaster or on the floor. In the loft space they will find flies, spiders and plant material that has been blown through the roof tiles during the summer.

Of most concern is that house mice, like many wild creatures, carry salmonellabacteria in their gut and when they expel their droppings, inevitably they’ll walk across them and transfer the bacteria to where ever the mouse travels. This will include you kitchen draining board. If your cups are stored upside down to drain, you will have the risk of direct contact with salmonella with your mouth. Mice will also crawl over plates, pots and pans that have been left out overnight

Mice often pass urine when expelling their droppings too. Therefore, mouse control is essential for modern day living.

House Mice are found in houses (hence their name).  Usually brown or grey in colour, their body length varies between 55-90mm, however their tail can add an additional 10mm to their length. Mouse droppings are black and rod-shaped and are about 3mm long. The house mouse likes a good source of food and nest near it. They do not need to drink water as they can survive on food with a water content. Nests are can be made from wool, newspaper and cloth. Mice are mainly active at night, feeling their way round with their whiskers and keen sense of smell.

It’s said if you can pass a pencil underneath a door, a mouse will pass through. Whilst young, they are able to dislocate their skull and hip bones to pass through these small gaps. Therefore, a trained and experienced pest controller can usually identify these areas for you.

Mice also happily chomp away at stuff around the home and hence cause damage to furniture, packets of food and clothing. Some have expensive tastes and cause thousands of pounds worth of damage by gnawing car interiors, computer networks and even money! Never store anything of value in a loft.

If you thought that fleas were a thing of the past then think again. Fleas have returned and are now a problem all year round. Not so many years ago, flea removal enquiries came through to the ABC 24/7 Pest Control pest controls phone between August and October, over the past five years we have had calls for flea control all year around.

In summer time, fleas spend their time outside in bushes and long grasses and will hitch a lift on your cat or dog indoors. Most wild animals carry fleas, including birds and hedgehogs, which also forage in the same area as your pet outside. Once indoors, fleas become a problem and your home will need to be treated.

Most fleas do not live on your pet – they live within the skirting boards of your home, at the base of the carpet pile and under laminate or wood flooring. This offers fleas the best protection from prey, such as spiders – or your vacuum cleaner! Some 70% of fleas in a given population live away from their host. However, most people don’t vacuum the edges of the carpets with the attachment of the cleaner, and to be truthful, even if you were to, fleas excrete a glue-like substance on their eggs so removal is extremely difficult to achieve. However, vacuuming does help. If you have bare floor boards fleas may breed on the ceiling below and crawl through the gaps above. Fleas also live and breed under laminate flooring too. Fleas that you find on your pet are female fleas that need protein from blood to lay yet more eggs. Fleas are prolific egg layers and deposit hundreds over their lifetime per female.

Most people that contact us for help have either already gone to the vets or tried an insecticide from the supermarket already, but it hasn’t worked. Why is this? There are several reasons including using the wrong insecticide (although the can of spray may have stated on the label ‘Flea Killer’), not using enough of it – we use an average of five litres of spray per household, or failure of control by just treating your pet and not the floor area. Fleas have become immune to some chemicals you can buy, in any flea population their can be a natural resistance present to the chemical you may use.  If there is, you will kill those with no resistance and those that survive will have total immunity from the product. In the UK, this suggests over-use and being reliant on just one chemical for flea control.

Call us and we will tailor a treatment to your needs at a time to suit you. We’ll also run through what you need to do to prepare for the visit, such as clearing floors, vacuuming carpets, children and animal management for health and safety etc.

Houses that have floorboards may be excluded form our guarantee.

Fleas can live between 7 and 14 days. Female fleas will divide their time between living on your pet to feed and returning to your flooring to lay more eggs – and this happens every day. The larvae bury themselves into carpets and may lay dormant for several weeks. The larvae travel up and down carpet fibres eating organic matter such as dried flea droppings and microscopic animal material when the adults sense warmth and vibration they will jump onto your pet (or you) and start the cycle over again.

The most obvious sign of fleas will be that your pet is continuously scratching. You should also be able to see them in the fur of your pet. Fleas are dark brown in colour and are approximately 1–2 mm long. You may also find tiny black specks of flea dirt on your pet just under their fur. The height of the summer is when fleas are most rife; however they can be nearly as bad at other times of the year if you have a warm central heated home.

Deliberately introduced to this country sometime in the 19th century the grey squirrel has since spread throughout most of mainland England and Wales. Mainly a resident of broadleaved and mixed woodlands it is also a common resident of urban parks and gardens.

Grey squirrels have multiplied hugely in South Wales and elsewhere since their introduction to the UK a little over a hundred years ago. Their spread, and the virus they carry, has largely eliminated the native red squirrel. Grey squirrels have two litters a year, of around 3-4 each time, and live between 2-6 years. It means that populations can quickly grow to problem levels.

Grey squirrels are easily recognised by their predominantly grey colour and bushy tails. The animals are around 45cm long including the 20cm tail. Sometimes the occasional tan hairs in their fur can make people mistakenly think they are seeing a red squirrel (in fact there are no red squirrels in the South Wales Area).

All squirrels are most active during daylight hours, and they can be seen widely in parks, woodlands and homes. Simple preventative measures such as gutter guards can help to prevent squirrels from invading a home or business premises, and we can advise on both removal of an existing infestation and prevention of future squirrel invasion.

Homes and businesses in South Wales face one principal problem from squirrels, which is the damage they cause to property. It is financial loss rather than disease that makes squirrels a significant threat.

Squirrels are destructive in woodlands, stripping bark from trees, which can pose a significant problem for forestry businesses and in parkland. The animals are also very adept at making their home in domestic attics, where there is real potential for damage to property.

It is an offence to release a grey squirrel deliberately into the wild, so if you are facing problems with squirrels you are not allowed to relocate them. ABC 24/7 Pest Control offers an ethical squirrel control and elimination service, with professional treatment of the problem by a specialist.

If wasps feel threatened, there is a high risk they will swarm and sting you, your children, pets, horses etc.

Wasps can be very annoying especially in and around food or drink in the summer time. Wasps start to construct their nest from late April in any crack or crevice as long as there’s a void behind it. Favourite wasp nest areas include the eaves of your house, the loft space, a shed or garage,  in a garden wall, tree or bush.

At the start of the wasp season there are only queen wasps. The queen was mated the year before and makes her nest which is the size of a ping-pong ball, hung from a ceiling.  There, she lays her first clutch of eggs. Hungry from her winter hibernation, she feeds from early pollen and nectar if she’s timed it right, with no heavy rain or frosts. The eggs hatch and new worker wasps (sterile females) do the job ofbuilding up the nest. The queen lays more eggs throughout the wasp nest season. Wasps will continue to build their nest throughout the summer months and they can reach to several thousand in a single nest. Wasp nests can continue even up to December (although it’s unusual).

Still unsure if you have wasps or bees?

Wasps are very protective and will do their utmost to protect the queen and the nest, unlike bees, wasps will often sting for no reason.

MOTHS - LEPIDOPTERA

ABC 24/7 Pest Control provide an expert local Moth pest control service throughout South Wales and have been specialising in Moth control for many years. We control Moths in domestic and commercial properties in the Swansea Bridgend Neath Port Talbot Llanelli and surrounding areas.

Clothes Moth are extremely destructive.  They are an unwelcome guest but ABC 24/7 Pest Control have a solution to control them. There are several species of clothes moth in the UK and the most common ones are the Common Clothes Moth and the Case Bearing Clothes Moth. Like other insects, the moth’s larval stage (caterpillar) is the part of their life cycle that  cause damage. In the case of the clothes moth they damage textiles by grazing the fibres. They actually digest the oily keratin from natural fibres including wools, silks, cottons and feathers. Incidentally, keratin is protein found on human skin, hair and nails too. Carpets and clothing that has been attacked shows distinctive bald patches meaning some items are fit only for the bin.

Clothes Moth can lay up to 400 eggs over their life time. These hatch within ten days and they turn into their destructive stage which is the larvae. The bad news is they can remain in their larval stage for up to two or three years, which is why you may not see many moths flying around your home. It depends on temperature and humidity as to when they turn into their third stage, the cocoon. Their spent cocoon cases can often be seen when their develop into their final stage of development, the adult. From here the cycle starts all over again. ABC 24/7 Pest Control South Waleshave effective control methods to help clothes moth removal from your carpets and clothing. As professional pest controllers we can identify where they are living and breeding and treat them accordingly. Natural fabrics such as wools, silks, furs and cottons are a prime target in wardrobes.  It’s unlikely your insurance policy will cover any damage as normally insects and vermin are excluded by the majority of insurance underwriters.

Varied Carpet Beetle, they are extremely destructive if left to forage and willdestroy carpets and clothing. Natural fabrics such as wools, silks, furs, feathers and cottons are a prime target. Carpet beetle larvae, known as ‘woolly bears’, avoid the light and live indoors, usually in dark, undisturbed places such as under carpets and inside wardrobes and clothing cupboards.

Carpet beetle infestation can be readily identified by remnants of frass, which is the beetles’ excrement coloured to what the insect is feeding on. It’s a dry, uniform pattern consisting of tiny granules. Additional evidence can be noted with cast larval skins scattered across the infested area. These are cast empty skins left behind when the beetle moults from one stage of it’s lifecycle to the next. Carpet beetle larvae, known as ‘woolly bears’ are also often found in birds nests and usually beetles gain access to properties via the loft from bird’s nests in the eaves.

About Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles are fairly small, measuring 1.5 to 4mm in length. The body is strongly convex, rather like the ladybird beetle and is characterised by the pattern of yellow, black and whitish scales on the body. Between 20 and 100 eggs are laid by the female during spring and early summer on furs, woollens and any dried materials of animal origin.

When the larvae hatch out, they are hairy and brown with three bunches of golden hairs on the abdomen. They normally reach a length of 4-5mm. They tend to avoid the light and, when disturbed, curl up into a ball. The eggs hatch between 10 to 35 days depending on the temperature. The larvae can last at least a year depending on the quality of the food supply. The adult beetle lives from 7-41 days. The adults appear in April, May and June and their resulting larvae hibernate during the following winter pupating during the latter part of February and March. On emergence the adult beetles seek the light so they usually fly to the windows. They fly to light coloured flowers where they feed on nectar and pollen. After mating, the females enter houses during late summer and autumn and lay their eggs in birds’ nests in roof voids and other suitable places.
